One thing I can’t get enough of lately is coconut water. I
have really been enjoying coconut water over the past few months. The
refreshing flavor quenches my thirst without making me feel guilty. Coconuts
are super healthy, and in Cambodia they are very cheap. Unfortunately, we won’t
have the same access to fresh coconuts back the U.S, but have no fear, you can
still get your hands on this delicious treat.
Coconuts are not only great for the water, but the mean
inside is also really delicious. The water itself is quite low in fat and
calories, but the meat is a different story. If you only consume the water it’s
about 50 calories a cup. In an average coconut you will get about 5 cups,
depending on size and ripeness. I usually get one coconut per day for about 50
cents in Cambodia. If you don’t have access to fresh coconuts, you can buy the
water at some grocery stores like Whole Foods or online at Amazon.
The health benefits of coconuts haven’t been fully studied,
but some studies suggest that drinking coconut water could potentially decrease
risk of heart attack and lower blood pressure.
Coconut water is a great substitute for Gatorade and other
sports drinks. It’s high in B vitamins and potassium. It also is full of amino
acids, enzymes and electrolytes. I know I love it after workouts and whenever I
need something cold and sweet, but low in calories.
